Background

It is in fact rather strange that most companies today have computerized their accounting, but overseen that many of the real bottlenecks actually exists in other parts of the business. Modern ERPs have made it possible to cut down on administrative, manual work in some areas, while other parts of the operations have not been affected at all, or even come out worse.

One of the problems is that traditional ERPs was initially developed to simplify the daily work for the staff at the accounting department. The systems where built upon concepts such as chart of accounts, customer ledgers, verifications, transactions etc.

Gradually as the ERPs have filled their obligations in the original areas of use, end user demands have forced the system vendors to more or less voluntarily add modules for time reporting, project management, customer relationship management, work orders etc

The disadvantages have often become apparent to the end users. Large, heavy and expensive systems where user friendliness and the quality of each module is overshadowed by the complexity. As a simple comparison it is obvious for most people that word processing applications (such as Microsoft Word), spreadsheet applications (such as Microsoft Excel) and photo editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop) are all used for different purposes. It is not surprising to us that the features for image editing in Word and Excel are very limited. Instead, we routinely use Photoshop for more advanced image editing knowing that we then can insert the image in Word or Excel.

For the very same reason that it is unsuitable to do anything but the most rudimentary image editing in Word or Excel, more and more companies now discover that their traditional ERP actually was not designed to be the "all-in-one" system. The shortcomings in their current ERP draws companies to start looking for a new, more advanced system. But to switch ERP to get features that are missing in their current system can in fact bring new costs that outweigh the benefits, for instance when they realize that the old appreciated features are now missing in the new system.
